Free! Chris Anderson’s New Book Launches
February 26, 2008 – 5:01 pm by Thomas GideonThe author of The Long Tail, Chris Anderson has an article over at Wired launching his latest opus, Free!
The rise of “freeconomics” is being driven by the underlying technologies that power the Web. Just as Moore’s law dictates that a unit of processing power halves in price every 18 months, the price of bandwidth and storage is dropping even faster. Which is to say, the trend lines that determine the cost of doing business online all point the same way: to zero.
This echoes what I have been discussing for some time, that user generated content, open media, remix culture are all made possible by the continual down trend of the cost of production and distribution. Anyone who has an idea to share or a story to tell, there is no real barrier to doing so.

Will the book be free?

Good question. I do not know but I suspect no, at least initially. Wired is giving away many copies of the issue that will feature a preview of the book. Maybe we’ll eventually get a free online or ebook version. It would seem to make sense for this book, in particular, to have a free version available at launch.
