Diesel Sweeties Anniversary PDFs, and CC Licensed to Boot
March 11, 2008 – 8:54 am by Thomas GideonI am a huge fan of R. Stevens and Diesel Sweeties. Before you click that link, just fair warning that this web comic is not to everyone’s taste. Some of it is a bit iffy in terms of being NSFW. If you don’t mind slightly risque, strongly ironic and sometimes crude humor and remember eight bit video game graphics fondly, I cannot recommend this work highly enough. Out of the handful of web comics I read, Stevens is also one of only two creators that puts each new strip out in a dedicated RSS feed, including the strip image itself, not just a link.
To celebrate the strip’s eighth anniversary, R. Stevens is releasing a ten volume set of electronic versions of the comic so far. Each volume will be a DRM-free PDF and he is putting them out under a CC BY-NC license. He’s given additional permission to re-format, for you favorite e-book reader for example, as long as you observe the non-commercial constraint.
He will be releasing the volumes one a week, originally scheduled to start 3/12. The initial response was apparently so strong, he decided to release the first volume a day early.
You can grab each file as it becomes available as either a direct download via a number of mirror sites or you can use BitTorrent. In the post for the first volume, Stevens gives some helpful links if you have never used BitTorrent. If you use the latter, be kind and leave your client running a while after your download completes to help share the bandwidth. (I know, it is so few megabytes but it is the principle of being a good torrent user.)
The first file is just over eight megabytes, so it is not very large, but is 201 pages, so there is plenty to enjoy.
I you like these archive releases, whether you are a new reader or an old, please do consider supporting Stevens by using his donation link or buying some swag. He has some excellent t-shirt designs from which to choose.
